Spring Fashion

Spring dresses are definitely the item to have this season. Very much inspired by the 50’s and early 60’s, you can find vintage or new fashions right on the rack in every major clothing store. Look for little ruffles, flowing fabrics, big buttons and belts.

White is everywhere. Be careful with this one as some complexions are not cut out for stark white. If you are nearing middle age, try using white in your accessories instead of brilliant white jackets or skirts. Everyone should be cautious about what we call Minnie Mouse shoes and please don’t break out the white pants, skirts and shoes until after Memorial Day. I don’t care what anyone says. Some rules are not meant to be broken.

Chunky shoes and platform sandals are still the rage this season. Be careful when pairing with your 50’s inspired dress or you will look like you came straight from a rummage sale and not the fashionable trendy shops. Of course some might say that is the trend too.

Chunky necklaces are still in this season as well. Natural woods and brighter colors play a part in the spring continuation of this fall trend.

A line and tulip skirts are all over the spring fashion scene. Watch the length and the belting. A line skirts are great camouflage for larger hips.

Tops are flirty with ruffles, cinching under the bust, and belting or gathers at the waist. These looks are great with jeans, loose fitting trouser style pants, and skirts but can also be paired with a tailored jacket and skirt or pants for work to add a little femininity to your tailored work attire.

Although many chiropractors and doctors may protest, the handbags are available in big and bigger. As always though there has to be balance between what you are wearing and the size and style of bag you are carrying.

About Denim Skirts

Owing to its versatile nature, denim skirts are a staple in every woman’s wardrobe, be it a mini that would look great with a sweater and strappy sandals, a sporty pleated skirt that is generally teamed with a tank top and sneakers, or a bohemian rocker chick version studded with crystals. Long denim skirts with a slim silhouette look sophisticated yet casual with a bright sweater and pumps or alternatively, could be worn with high heels to dress up the look.

Far from being restricted to street fashion, denim is making its presence felt in the world of haute couture. Marc Jacobs recently showcased his line of stretch denim A-line skirts with zipper pockets at front and single button closure. According to him, there’s nothing like a classically urban denim skirt to get an indecisive girl through any don’t-know-what-to-wear days. Designer Miuccia Prada turned denim inside out for strapless dresses worn over T-shirts in her latest collection while earlier this year, D-Squared combined denim with suede leather in a collection based on rodeo chic.

Make sure you consider your body type when choosing the length of your denim skirt, though. While denim minis flatter slim figures, a pencil-length skirt paired with a soft, feminine top is a great elegant option for those blessed with fuller figures.

Handcrafted Bracelets

Handcrafted bracelet is when an artisan personally picks out the beads and colors him/herself. And then decides on a design, stringing material, and what kind of impression this piece of jewelry should make. There really is a lot that goes into the thought process.

I can tell you that I personally create all of my bracelets…. I take a whole evening, or even days to create a special piece. In my jewelry box–you can expect to see that not one design is exactly the same. I get so many compliments on my work that they ask me–where did you buy that?…. (of course the ones who know me well know that I have made it myself, and compliment me on my artwork)–but for those who don’t know me, they will just sigh in amazement that it seems almost impossible to create..

So when I say a handcrafted bracelet is something to cherish–I truly mean it. There is so much work from the heart that goes into it-thats why its so hard for a true jewelry artisan to part with his/her jewelry–It becomes a part of us.

–The next time you receive a handcrafted bracelet or any other piece of jewelry–take it as a compliment. It means that you are special to that person and they wanted to find something original and unique to give you…

Luxury of Wool

From warm sweaters to bohemian scarves, cashmere garments are considered timeless, tasteful, and elegant. Wear them to occasions -whether casual or intimate -and you’ll find that you’ll stand out in sleek comfort. This is why the popularity of cashmere has only grown with the years.

Though it has been accorded much acclaim and praise, cashmere is actually the fur of the humble Kashmir goats, often harvested during their respective molting seasons. Kashmir goats can be found in China, India, Tibet, and Iran -but are primarily bred in Mongolia.

In fact, history tells that rulers from centuries past have gifted their loved ones with cashmere garments -owing to the beauty of the wool and the status it accorded because of its high value.

Due to cashmere’s popularity; however, Americans have also jumped right in and started breeding their own cattle. What actually adds to the cashmere’s price is the fact that it takes one Kashmir goat four to five years to shed enough fur to make just one garment. It is no wonder that people who collect garments made out of cashmere treat these articles with utmost care.

Cashmere wool can either be knit or woven to form various garments. Not only are such clothing highly exquisite to look out, they also provide much warmth during cold weather.

Cashmere garments are considered really chic gifts, whether they are given to the young and old, those who favor vintage or modern ways of dressing, as well as people with different lifestyles.

Just as there are many ways to design clothes made of cashmere, you’ll find that this type of wool also varies in cost, depending on which part of the Kashmir goat the fur came from.

The best quality often comes from the throat and underbelly, and therefore garners the higher price. The lesser quality, which is still actually good, comes from the Kashmir goat’s legs and back -and this is, logically, less expensive.

Whatever the quality, cashmere fibers can be fashioned into dresses, capes, scarves, sweaters, hats, mittens, shawls, and even blankets! There is a wide array of articles to choose from, and cashmere lovers claim that with proper care and handling, cashmere articles are the ultimate keepsakes.

Truth be told, even as more and more people purchase the latest designs, avid vintage collectors are also on the prowl for the more intricate designs of the past. Cashmere is considered timeless, and when knitted and woven in good taste, often provides an air of sophistication for the wearer.

Proper cleaning for knitted cashmere garments involve gentle hand-washing, while woven ones must be dry cleaned. Keep these garments in areas of normal temperature.

Cocktail Dresses

When choosing from the many available cocktail dresses, you should familiarize yourself with some of the lengths that you may encounter. Depending on the current fashion trends of the year or wardrobe acceptability, the length of a cocktail dress varies. Some cocktail dresses stop just above the knee, while other selections end around two inches from above the ankle, known as a tea length cocktail dress. When a cocktail dress touches the ankle, it is “ballerina length” – this is commonly associated with being an evening gown, with the differences between the two hard to tell.

Today, cocktail dresses come in an array of beautiful materials, with silk, satin, and chiffon these being the most popular choice.

Some people receive an invitation to an event or party and have no clue what to wear. The fear of over or under dressing for the occasion begins to set in. There are some clues to follow when you are puzzled on what to wear to an event. When using the invitation as a clue, you are more likely to casually dress if the invitation arrives through email or by telephone. If the invitation arrives through the mail, chances are you may be in need of a cocktail dress.

When invited to attend a benefit or event held by a charity or other association, a cocktail dress is probably the attire you should be thinking of. Sometimes deciphering what sort of wardrobe to raid is as simple as reading the entire invite. More than likely, you will find phrases, such as “casual dress,” “semi-formal attire” or “formalwear required” on the invitation. Moreover, the last resort if you are unsure is to call the phone number that is included on the invite and ask to make sure.

When attending a cocktail party, you shouldn’t wear a sequined gown – they are for a more formal occasion, such as a wedding or anniversary party. Cocktail dress lengths can range from a mini length to something that stops above the ankles. The type of material sends a message – satin and silk are popular choices, accompanied by flattering jewelry, handbags, and other accessories. The shoes that you select can also set off a cocktail dress – especially if you are sporting a shorter length and the shoes become an important focal point.

About Winter Glamour

This time of year, every glossy cover of Elle, Vogue, and Mademoiselle makes me dream of looking like one of those glam girls wrapped up in a delectable sweater and plush boots. Unfortunately every time I try to mimic one of those magazine looks, everything goes astray.

Just this week I tried the tight jeans-bulky sweater-chunky boots look. It looked winter, but it didn’t work for winter. I fought with every jacket in my closet, trying to cajole one to button over my new oversized turtleneck sweater. I was relieved when I finally got my pea coat to close, but the relief washed away when I bustled over to the mirror to see that I looked about 7 months pregnant.

All the layering would be great — if I was studying polar bears in the Arctic for the day. I wasn’t. I was on my way to work. I made a quick stop at the coffee shop, and the second I walked in, I started overheating. By the time I got to the counter, I could smell my perspiration starting to mix with the wool of the sweater. I like the natural beauty look, but I’m not fond of the smell. I was waiting for my mocha and madly fanning myself with a menu, when I glanced down to see that my new furry boots had nearly been ruined by the rock salt scattered on the city sidewalks.

After all the time I spent buying, planning, and putting on my new outfit, my sparkly chandelier earrings were the only thing that survived the morning. They were the least expensive part of my attire, and I got compliments on them all day. Apparently a little twinkle makes people feel good.

Like any smart woman, I resort to black in the wintertime despite what the houses of haute couture scream at us about wearing more color. Black looks good day or night, and for a girl on the run, it doesn’t require much thought. The best thing about black is that it hides all types of flaws, like those caused by eating an entire pumpkin cheesecake on Thanksgiving. But black is not only thinning; it’s a great palette for accessories.

This year, women have a lot of jewelry options. You can fall back on the old basic of diamonds. Or you can try this winter’s exciting new collections of colored pearls and shells. They look fabulous with black, and they can be as dressy as a diamond necklace, while offering more personality and flare. You can also highlight your eye color with a similar colored necklace. Nothing is more beautiful than a pair of sapphire blue eyes with a matching necklace.

Rhinestones are always a holiday favorite. This season, designers are using them with fiber optic glass and silver. It’s a new take on a jeweler’s staple. Red stones can highlight the flushed skin and rosy cheeks of winter. And the fiber optics in the glass makes the necklaces, earrings, and bracelets glow. The combination creates a look that no one will forget.

Trendsetting Handbag

Chloe is, by far, one the greatest design houses in the world. I absolutely love their work! At times, I feel that some of the French designers are a little over the top…but where would true fashion be without their sense of creativity and innovation. Chloe has been a leader in the world of fashion, especially since the Stella McCartney assumed the helm. Her star power and understanding of classic design reinvigorated a company that was often lacking the cohesive aesthetic that truly binds a collection together. Make no mistake about it…Chloe is the new Gucci!

Vivienne Westwood has done more for British design that any other designer in modern times. In many ways, the entire punk genre owes her a debt of allegiance. Vivienne was just a young girl during the heyday of punk, when she met a fellow named Malcolm McLaren. For those of you not particularly well versed in your punk rock history, Malcolm was the manager of the consummate British punk band – The Sex Pistols. After dressing the Pistols for a number of years, she opened her own shop in London called Sex Boutique. Punks worldwide have adopted her design aesthetic, and the rest is history.

Monica Botkier is yet another brilliant designer. Her designs are held in high esteem by women all around the world. After spending the early part of her career as a fashion photographer, Monica Botkier has certainly spent enough time in the fashion world to know what constitutes a great handbag. She is able to strike the perfect balance between function and form, and her designs are some of the most sought after with fashionistas everywhere. Monica Botkier’s designs are famous for their detailing, hardware, and innate sophistication.

Knit Scarves

Personally, I like the hand made one’s made by yours truly, myself. I enjoy having that one of a kind accessory item that looks great. With the huge selection of beautiful yarns out there I just had to pick up my knitting needles and dust them off. They’ve been non-stop ever since. You can find yarn at all the local craft store’s; AC Moore, Jo-Anne Fabrics, Michael’s to name a few as well as their websites. Some of them will offer classes, or will have representative’s near the yarn aisle to help you get started and answer any questions.

All the top yarn companies have very informative website’s to help you get started also. They have an amazing selection of free, yes free patterns that you can print off and use at your disposal. Lion Brand, http://www.lionbrand.com even has a how to section. I forgot how to “cast off” and it has step by step instructions that set me on my way. All the patterns have very clear instructions on how to knit or crochet and what supplies to purchase. I have made several myself and found them all very easy to follow. They even have the famous Martha Stewart Poncho pattern available online. I wanted one and don’t crochet so I forwarded the pattern to my mother. She so graciously made some for me.

I get endless compliments whenever I wear it. I have now ventured off making my own patterns. What can I say, I’ve got the knitting bug or should I say yarn bug! It’s the yarns that pull you in to buying so much. There really is an amazing selection out there. You can find; cashmere, wool, fun fur, metallics, sequence, curly, fuzzy, you name it they have it. So pick up those knitting needles and get making those scarves. You’ll get the bug too and will end up making them for everyone you know!

For those of you who have no interest in making a scarf or just don’t have the knack for it, there is still hope. Many stores offer a decent selection of knit scarves but you will find a limited selection in the yarn styles. I recommend attending one of the many craft fairs being offered in your area. To look for top quality vendors, look for the juried shows or ones that are very selective in choosing their vendors. You will definitely get a higher quality of vendors and therefore a higher quality of products.

There are some very artistic and talented knitters out there selling their wares. Artistic people not only like to make great products but really like selling them to others to enjoy. I get excited when someone buy’s one of my scarves and can’t wait to wear it. They always come back for more to buy as gifts to share their great find. Another place to shop for knit scarves is at your local art galleries. They consign artist work and stock plenty of gift items as well as artwork. They will have a high quality of vendors. But do hurry, the stores currently are clearing out their winter merchandise for Spring clothing.

Womens Flipflops

Flip flops are even commonly seen in the work place these days! The designs of flip flops have become so flattering that they are now suitable to wear with dresses, skirts, slacks, and jeans. Of course, flip flops and shorts will always go well together! Flip flops come in a wide variety of styles and designs. Some have heels, and some are flat. Some have the traditional rubberized soles, while others are made of leather, wood, plastic, and a huge variety of other types of materials. When it comes to flip flops, anything goes, and all things are possible!

Flip flops are very flattering when worn with Capri style pants. In fact, it seems that the Capri style pants are what made flip flops more attractive to women. Designers were forced to sit up and take notice. They finally realized that women will not be content with the same old – ugly – style flip flops that were available for years in a one-size, one-style fits all fashion. Today, women want their footwear – even their flip flops – to be fashionable and stylish – and designers have answered that demand!

Many famous designers now have flip flop designs out on the market, and there are shoe companies that specialize only in flip flop sandals. Because each woman has an intricate style of her own, many of them even decorate their flip flops to make them even more stylish and unique.

Flip flops are not as cheap as they once were either. Of course, you can still find the old style of flip flops and purchase a pair of those for less than three bucks, but the more stylish – cute – flip flops cost quite a bit more. Some women even pay upwards of $100 for a pair of flip flops – and flip flops by famous designers go even higher!

Aside from the overall appearance of the shoe, many flip flop designers have taken more of an interest in comfort and support when it comes to flip flop designs as well. There are many styles of flip flops on the market today that feature arch support. The thong that goes between the toes is often made of the softest leather to keep the material from rubbing blisters between the toes as well. Comfort, support, fit, style, and design are all factors when new flip flops are made today!

Fit is something that was never important in the past when it came to flip flops. Women had a choice between small, medium, large, and in some instances, even extra large. Today, quality flip flops have actual shoe sizes so that women can get a better – more comfortable fit. This is revolutionary in the flip flop world – kids and men still have to settle for small, medium, large, and extra large in most cases, and their choices are very limited when it comes to flip flops.

Petite Dress

When choosing a dress, choose something which has just one colour, and best to choose dark colours, this will give you a streamlined effect. To elongate your body, choose a dress with a short skirt and make sure you wear a pair of heels as this is the biggest thing you can do to make yourself taller! Keep things simple for the most amazing effect.

Here are a few tips:

  • Keep prints in proportion to you figure, no bigger then the palm of your hand, otherwise you will look like a clown.
  • Wear 3/4 sleeves, on dresses, shirts and jumpers.
  • Avoid too much jewelry, or at least heavy jewellery.
  • When layering, wear light weight materials like cotton, linen and especially silks.
  • Wear monochromatic colours.
  • When wearing separates avoid contrasting colours such as a navy skirt and a white top, go for an all-in-one colour way.
  • Keep in mind that the more fitted the look, the more flattering it will be.

If you are petite, then there are many options for you but the best is something figure-hugging and knee length.
